Constructed starting in 1736, by the British to defend their southern border from the Spanish who occupied Florida and farther south, the fort now in ruins at Fort Frederica National Monument was an important site in the history of the British colonies. Over 600 British troops were stationed at the fort during its active existence, and today the fort holds a museum and the ruins are open for visitors to explore. Located on Saint Simons Island not far from Brunswick, the site is an interesting look back into colonial history.
Visitor center open daily 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
